MINI engine construction at Hams Hall, Birmingham, England* The “R” is for Rover.  The chassis codes were carried over when BMW bought the MINI brand. 
The “F” chassis codes are BMW’s own engine designation

W10  1.6L 4-cylinder, made in Brazil by Tritec.
W11  (S models) supercharged 1.6L 4-cylinder, made in Brazil by Tritec.

Second generation MINIs  (R55 – R61)
N12  Prince engine, designed by BMW, built by PSA (Peugeot Citroën)
N14   (S models), Twin-scroll turbo Prince engine, designed by BMW, built by PSA (Peugeot Citroën).  The engines’ components are produced by PSA at their Douvrin, France, facility, with MINI engine construction at Hams Hall in Birmingham, England
