On Saturday, January 28, 2012, the British Motoring Club of Montgomery, with 15 cars and 28 people, motored to Auburn on our annual “Pizza Run” to Shakey’s Pizza. We couldn’t have asked for a better day — bright sunshine, a cloudless blue sky and a high temperature of mid-sixties. Motoring to “The Loveliest Village” were:

Andy – ’76 Triumph TR-6
Ron & Lynn – ’92 Jaguar XJS V12

Our trip began up US 231 N with the first of four Tallapoosa River crossings, over the hills and curves of Redland Road, then AL 14 E to Tallassee. After meeting up with Ron and Lynn, we continued through Notasugla, Loachapoka, and into Auburn. Considering the number of cars in the caravan, we stayed together amazingly well thanks to David radioing occasional separations through Auburn from the caboose.
Our tables had been reserved at Shakeys. I had requested seating for 15-20 people, so when we strolled in with 28, seating was a little cozy, but good. Service after ordering went well (if a bit slow), and everyone seem to enjoy their pizzas and potions. With belts a little tighter, we adjourned to the parking lot for more visiting and car talk. It was especially nice to get to know our visitors better.
We took a different route back home via north Auburn, Lee County 72/Tallapoosa 18 to AL 50, 229, 63, 170 and finally back to US 231. Once clear of Auburn’s traffic lights, we enjoyed more hills and curves. I only missed one turn – I mean, I made a 270 degree turn to let the back markers catch up – yeah, that’s what I did. Before we left Shakey’s, Cathy suggested that we make an unscheduled stop at Overlook Park, near Lake Martin Dam. It’s a beautiful little park with a magnificent view of the lake with the additional benefit of having a great stretch of AL 50 to get there. The last leg of the trip took us below the dam, through Eclectic and Wetumpka and home again. Thanks for a great turnout and outing.
