Club History

It is hard to say exactly when or where the idea of a British car club got started. For a long time several people had talked about the possibility of putting something together. This idea was passed around until finally on February 22, 1992 the first British Car Gathering was held at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. This seemed like a good place for a show of these types of British cars. There were 16 cars in attendance.

It was decided that the cars should be enjoyed on the road, so a trip was planned for a drive and picnic. This trip took the participants to Chewacla State Park in Auburn, Alabama. Again a good turnout of British cars made the run and friendships were made.

Following the relatively successful participation and enjoyment resulting from these two outings, it was decided there was enough interest to form a club to further enjoy the fellowship and cars in a more organized manner. The next get-together was held at Hotel Talisi in nearby Tallassee, Alabama for an organizational meeting and election of officers. This was the official beginning of the club with about forty members. (This was also the last stuffy meeting we’ve had since this club is for fun.) Because of this fun the membership quickly grew to around one hundred members in the first five years.

Some of the reasons for forming the club were to make new friends, enjoy the cars, help others with their cars, and to share an all around fellowship and common interest.

Then and now, the club has held to these ideals. Come and join us.

March 17, 2014

Welcome!

Terry YoungLet us extend a hearty handshake and a fond “Hello” on behalf of the British Motoring Club of Montgomery, Alabama!  We think you’ll immediately find our club as one of the finest!   We enthusiastically encourage you to join if you’re not already a member!

Beginning in 1992, founded by Hamer Phillips, Rodney Martin, Raymond Cooper, Terry Mount , and Pam Bransford until today, our club members have enjoyed the comradely of owning, driving, working on and talking about these wonderful automotive machines.   Keeping that in mind this year’s theme is. “Share your automotive knowledge

Feel free to look over the BMCM website and to discover what being a BMCM member holds.   More importantly, plan to join us at one of our monthly meetings held on the second Monday at 7:00 PM at Jan’s Beach House Grill [MAP].  Oh, yes!  Bring your British car and be prepared to tell everyone all about it.

Lastly, we want you to focus your attention to our 2015 BMC Calendar of Events that is second to none!  This is our serpentine belt that holds our club together.   As you look it over you’ll find there are so many excursions that we’re confident there is one (actually more) that will appeal to you making membership what is all about.   The reason for our motto.  The fun is in the fellowship.”

We can’t wait to meet you if you are considering joining or to see you again if you already are!

Sincerely,

Terry E. Young

2016 Puzzle Rally Promo

April Outing to The Berg/Rumph Farm in Perote, Sponsored by Bill and Barbara Berg

Don’t forget the April 23rd outing to the Berg/Rumph Farm in Perote. This will be a Puzzle Rally that will take about two hours to complete and will acquaint you with back roads of Montgomery and Bullock Counties that you have never traveled before. The course is approximately 80 miles long beginning from the Pike Road Town Hall (No Way Jose’s) parking lot [MAP] and will end in Perote, Alabama. Cars will begin leaving at 9:30AM at 5 minute intervals, If any of you would like to drive straight to Perote and not participate in· the rally, you will be given directions and will depart Pike Road at approximately 11:00AM

When you arrive at the destination, you will find a comfortable cabin with two bathrooms and all the comforts of home (we even have air conditioning!), you will be greeted by Barbara, Margaret Adams, and Dr Paul Rumph (Barbara’s brother). When everybody finally arrives, Barbara and Margaret will set up a “make it yourself” sandwich lunch with many extras to fill you up.  After lunch, you are welcome to hang around and go swimming in the pond, fishing (bring your own fishing pole and bait), hiking around the 500 acres (you might find an arrowhead!), or just sit on the deck overlooking the pond and swap lies with each other.

Please bring a folding chair, hiking shoes if you plan to explore the farm, insect repellent, fishing pole, and an appetite! Food, drinks, ice, napkins, etc, will be provided.

This was the 2015 Calendar:

Lee & Mary Anne have invited us back to their shop in rural Geneva County.  If this will be your first visit, you’re in for a treat.  You can get a preview, from our visit in 2014.  It’s a 95 mile trip from Montgomery that will take us just over 2-hours including a short pit stop in Troy.  Here’s a link to the [MAP].  Major portions of US 231 have a speed limit of 65 MPH.  If this is faster than you are comfortable with, just let me know before we depart and we can adjust accordingly.  Let’s plan to meet at the  IBERIABANK on Taylor Road at Archibald Drive and be ready to roll at 9:00 am. (Note:  The IBERIABANK is across Taylor Road and just south of our previous meeting place at Applebee’s.  By moving across Taylor Road, we will eliminate the traffic light that only allows about 5 cars through at a time.  Exiting the IBERIABANK  we have a long merge lane with NO light.)

Directions (Download)

LEG #1 IBERIABANK to Troy: 41 min (42.1 miles)

It’s pretty much a straight shot to Troy down US 231. The LEFT TURN at Taylor Road onto US 231 S has 2 LEFT TURN lanes.  Double up here then return to single file once everyone has made it through.

We’ll make our mid-trip REST STOP and REGROUP at the KANGAROO station at the Henderson Highway (CR 21) intersection.  If you use their facilities, please remember to support them by purchasing a drink or snack.

LEG #2:  Troy through Enterprise:  46 min (37.1 miles)

With legs stretched and bladders relaxed, we’ll continue on US 231 S to the next intersection where we’ll TURN RIGHT and head SOUTH on AL 87

About 8 miles (12 minutes) down the road where AL 87 bears right, STAY STRAIGHT ON AL 167

When we reach the bypass around Enterprise, continue on AL 167  around “Boll Weevil Circle” and stay on 167 where it leaves the bypass to the S.E. at the CITGO Station.  We’ll REGROUP in the merge lane for those caught by lights.

LEG#3: Enterprise to Lee & Mary Anne’s:  20 min (16.4 miles)

Continue on AL 167 for 12 min (11.5 miles) crossing the Choctawhatchee River and climbing a long straight hill to the STOP SIGN at CR 41 TURN LEFT onto CR 41.

Continue on CR 41 for 4 min (3.8 miles) and TURN RIGHT onto CR 85.

Continue on CR 85 for 2 min (1.0 miles) and TURN LEFT onto CR 69 (Shiloh Road).

Just 400 feet then TURN Left into Lee & Mary Anne’s driveway.  Stay in the existing ruts unless your car needs a bath in a septic tank.

Here’s How You Can Help Our Caravan Stay Together
(Download)

  • Please familiarize yourself with the MAP & DIRECTIONS and print them if you don’t trust your memory.
  • Top off your petrol before arriving.
  • Conventional protocol is for smaller cars at the front of the line,  progressively larger toward the rear.  This makes it easier for the lead car to see where everyone is.  Last car, please have your headlights on.
  • Maintain a 2-second interval behind the car in front of you.  More than this distance just invites interlopers and ensures that we’ll be separated.
  • We won’t try to wait for folks at the back to catch up at each light.  If you’re caught by a red light, we’ll regroup at the designated regrouping points at the rest stop in Troy, and again where we exit the bypass in Enterprise in the merge lane.
  • Don’t rely on just following the person in front of you.  Traffic lights have a way of knowing that’s what you’re doing and change just to mess with you.
  • Single file is good on the rural portions of our trip, but in the cities, double file will minimize separations.
  • If you have a road emergency, call me at 334-301-1420

Thanks,

Russell

Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 11,  at Jan’s Beach House Grill [MAP] in the private dining room (meal or appetizer optional).  Plan to order by 5:30 – 6:00pm and we’ll begin our meeting at 7:00pm.

March 28 – Tinkers Day at Hamer’s shop.  8:00AM – Noon.  Hamer opens his shop for us to preform minor repairs on our British cars.  Click for Map

Travel Tips:  Some of us are always caught by red lights motoring through the city limits.  Re-group points will be at:

If you’ll be joining us along our route, just fall in line as we pass.

It helps to travel double-file where possible and maintain a 2-second interval on the road.

If you have a 2-w radio, use channel 5.0

Hello.  I welcome you to the British Motoring Club of Montgomery, Alabama.  The club was formed in 1992 for fellowship and enjoyment of the British Car hobby. Our club is open to the owner of, or interest, in any British car marque.  We avoid formality, rules, and bylaws – opting instead to enjoy our cars and friends to the fullest. The founding fathers – Hamer Phillips, Rodney Martin, Raymond Cooper, and Terry Mount – built a strong and lasting foundation of fun and friendship.

We meet every second Monday at 7:00 PM at the Young Barn Pub & Oyster Bar  [MAP]  in the private dining room,  for a short business meeting, refreshments, and tire kicking.

In addition to the meetings we have a driving event on a monthly basis. Some of these are short day trips of a few hours while some may be overnight trips to car shows or points of interest. We encourage our members to drive their British cars on these outings, but other brands are always welcome. The fun is in the fellowship!

Pay us a visit, show us your car, share a story with us,  and join us for a good time with fellow British car owners.

Keep ’em on the road and enjoy the Backroads and Byways.
