2016 Ice Cream Run to Peach Park

Summer arrived with a vengeance this year — just in time for our annual mouth-cooling Ice Cream Run to Peach Park, led by Don Green.  We met at the Catfish House on Cobbs Ford Road, in Millbrook on June 11 at 0900. For many, it was the first time we had seen David’s MGA with its new interior (very nice).  And, it’s always a treat to see Alex in his RHD Mini.  At 9:15 (following a drivers meeting where we were cautioned about the local LEO stalking the four-way stop in Coosada), we were on the road.  The only casualty on our ride was Bob’s clutch, withering in the heat in the first two miles.  With plenty of free advice and some vigorous clutch pedal pumping, Bob & Marion headed back home while the rest of us motored up the back roads of Elmore, Autauga, and Chilton counties, relishing the shade whenever possible.  It’s nice and cool inside the ice cream parlor where most ate, rather than drank, their ice creams.  Outside, in the shade, we tolerated the heat while visiting with our friends.

Later, some needed to head back home while others headed up I-65 to another farmer’s market for fresh peaches en route another 30 miles to Montevallo to visit Orr Park to see the “tree faces” carved into the eastern red cedars that line Shoal Creek.  A local artist has transformed the park to a destination for the town with his chain saw.  That done, we headed back home via AL 25 & US 31 that led us to… you guessed it, Tin Top BBQ.  This would be our last visit with Alex Nelson.  He’s moving to Virginia next week.  Alex (and his Mini) have been a real asset to our club.  We hate to see him go, but wish him well and hope he stays in touch.

Back on the road with dark clouds threatening, most hit I-65 and received a free car-wash.  If Tom had slowed down, he could have had a free shampoo as well, but he demonstrated his skill as a top-down motorer, driving right through the rain drops.

Thanks to Don for organizing the event and leading the way.
