2014 Cheaha Lunch Run

Mt Cheaha Lunch Run and a Visit to Wayne’s World of Watt Nots

It seemed like old times. More – make that all – cars were British for this run. It was surprising to see as the cars gathered. Bobby was there first in his Austin Healey 3000. Soon the Brits were rolling in. An Austin Healey 3000, MGA, three MGBs, a Jaguar XK8, and Triumphs – a TR6 and Spitfire. Off on a day long adventure including some “spirited” driving.

We had a nice surprise when Adams Hudson arrived to show off his Audi R8. What a car! All white, that engine sitting behind the seats totally visible through its glass cover. Many thanks to Adams as he shares his exotics with us – Pantera, Ferrari, GT40. You get the picture – very nice cars we always enjoy seeing.

It was really great to see two of the “Road Warriors” back in action. Andy’s TR6 has been mended and sounds great. Blitz’s Spitfire has met with repairs and – well it sounds RAW as Andy puts it. The car is wild, has one hell of a sound, and appears to have the power to back it all up.

Soon we were in the Cheaha Twisties. My puny powered MGA out front. Since Andy had brought his mom Ruby, a nice easy stroll through here was in order. That didn’t last long! Its hard not to play on this road. As I felt Andy’s TR6 nudge me along, we let the ponies loose. Even Ruby had a smile at road’s end.

The view atop the mountain was great. Soon we were stuffed and it was time for another run down the Twisties. Andy led us and again we enjoyed a much faster pace than maybe we should have. I think I glanced at 60 in a 25 zone once! Andy, Blitz, David, and Malcolm blasted through again.

Wayne Watts has been collecting for 50 years. His place was recently featured on American Pickers and the Discovery Channel was there recently filming. If you haven’t been, it is worth a look. Old cars – several police version – and historical objects abound. He has collected quite a bit of local history and preserves it here for anyone to see. Anything from arrowhead, swords, black iron skillets, antique radios – you name it and you can find it here. We even found Roland & Doris here!

Wayne is a very friendly guy and really promotes the county and city well. We all left with a schedule of events and interesting places to see in this area. Upcoming November 1 is the Lineville Car Show. This has grown every year and now hosts over one thousand cars we are told. I went about 20 years ago and there were several hundred at that time. So pay Wayne a visit and take a look around. There are many interesting stories here and he is glad to share.

Thanks to Roland & Doris – SOB, Don & Verna Green – XK8, Malcolm & Janet – MGB, Pam – MGBGT, Bob & Marion – MGB, Andy & Ruby – TR6, Blitz & Amanda – Spitfire, Bobby – Austin Healey 3000, and me – MGA for a fun day and enjoyable company.
