15th British Car Day & Picnic

It seems our bad weather days have been bidden farewell since our move to Lagoon Park. Though a little windy at times, a better day for showing cars would be hard to find. Our 15th Car Day once again filled the field with beautiful cars. Some rare and unique cars were on hand this year.

Bill Mitchell of Mitchell’s Classics brought two Lotus cars – an early Europa and a late Elise. Two excellent examples of Colin Chapman’s idea of small engines, light bodies, and fast cars. Our Birmingham friends also brought a Europa, so the two early cars sandwiched the Elise for a really nice Lotus display.

European cars were again featured with some excellent examples from Germany – a Thing, Porsche, and Mercedes filling the bill. I hope you got a look at the SL with the blower on the engine. Talk about unique! We had two Asian cars this year. Bill’s Triumphus and a special Mazda Speed – a factory turbo powered Miata.  How does an Electric Powered Sunbeam Alpine suit you. Take a look at David Love’s creation.

We recognized two members who passed on this year. Bernie Lanigan and Jeff Jeffries.  Jeff was a lifelong lover of the Mini Cooper and a memorial award went to Edgar Diaz for best original Mini. It was very nice to have Joyce, Bill, and Susan at our show for the first presentation of the award to Jeff’s long time friend. Another special award was presented to David Price in memory of Bernie. An arbor press Bernie made in college had been blasted and sealed by Ron Pardo and was presented at the show.

Many beautiful cars deserved awards, the Bentley, Healeys, Sunbeams, and fantastic Mgs. The 1947 Allard however, definitely stole the spotlight. George & Kathi Needham finally have this awesome and very rare car on the road and were rewarded with best of show and deservedly so.
